I pulled up in front of the 9th precinct. Pops and I exited the car and headed up the steps. I was hurting all over from Mikey G’s thugs, but I was hoping to keep that detail from Marty. We were greeted by my good friend the desk sergeant, he made to keep me from entering but I wasn’t in the mood. I guided Pops past him and moved right behind him towards Marty’s office. The sergeant moved to get up but I gave him a strong glare and he thought better of it.

We arrived in front of Marty’s office door, which was partly open. I gave a quick knock and then pushed my way in, Pops followed. Marty looked up from a stack of papers first at me and then at Pops. He didn’t smile.

“What the hell is this, Di?” he said.

“Good thing you’re sitting down, Marty,” I said and ushered Pops into one of the two chairs that sat in front of Marty’s desk. I took the other and shot Marty a smile. “Pops has something he wants to tell you, Marty.” I tried to look cute and cuddly, Marty just rolled his eyes.

“Ok, so what say we get to it already, ok?” Marty said as he pulled a cigarette from the half full pack that was resting on his desk next to a half full ash tray. I could tell he wasn’t pleased at the sight of Pops, because he didn’t offer either of us a smoke. With the smoke hanging from the corner of his mouth Marty put his elbows on the edge of the desk and folded his hands, he also raised his eyebrows to let us know this had better be good. Good was a relative term, it would be good for me, not so much for Marty’s ulcer.

Pops proceeded to tell Marty everything we had talked about, right down to the part about the scar. Marty took the smoke from his mouth and crushed it out. He took a deep breath, leaned back in his chair, and folded his hands behind his head. He was quiet for a few seconds and then spoke.

“So basically what you are telling me is that I not only have the wrong guy locked up, but that the real killer is his twin brother?” Marty said. I looked at Pops and we both nodded in unison. Marty shook his head and got on the phone. “Carter, I need you to grab a couple boys and head over to pick up Paulie Gentile,” Marty yelled more than said into the phone.

“What? How should I know? Check out the usual spots, Gianna’s on 31st or the pool hall over on Wallace.” Marty slammed the phone down and looked at me shaking his head, then without saying a word he picked up the phone again. This call was to my good friend the desk sergeant. Marty told him to get a release for Joe Gentile, there was a lot of swearing
